A Princess of Mars - Celtx Project of the week #20

Pow
It's a pleasure to award this week's POW prize to David Cortesi for his adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's classic fantasy novel, A Princess of Mars.  - "...a wonderful scientific romance that perhaps can be best described as early science fiction melded with an epic dose of romantic adventure."

Thumbnail

A lot can be learned from this project because not only are we treated to a good script, but David also shares with us his project notes which reflect incredible attention to detail related to descriptions of various story elements, characters, and locations, and the notes also provide transparency and valuable insight to David's vision of the project and to the challenges encountered while adapting the story.

It's clear Cortesi put a great deal of work into adapting this novel to screenplay. While unrelated to his own effort, other attempts to bring the same classic to real production have been sited on IMDb and in this ERB fanzine. I have no doubt that 'when' David's script gets into the right hands, we'll be seeing his vision of 'The Princess of Mars' on the big screen too.

Thanks for sharing, David Cortesi... and Congratulations!!
We look forward to reading more from you.

Script Frenzy and Celtx

Sf_logo_mediumPssst....You might have heard already but just in case....

Our friends over at The Office of Letters and Light who brought you NaNoWriMo (also known as National Novel Writing Month which happens to be the largest writing contest in the world with over 79,000 participants in 69 countries), are about to launch a NEW! event called Script Frenzy. (Celtx forum member, 'zotz' also extends an invitation here.)

Starting in June (that's 8 days to be exact!), this International writing event is free for kids and adults who dare to take on the fun and scintillating challenge of writing 20,000 words in 30 days!! There are no judges or prizes--everyone who hits the word-count goal within the month is a winner.

The 5 Basic Rules are (#5 being the most Important!):
• 1) To be crowned an official Script Frenzy winner, you must write a script of at least 20,000 words and verify this word count on ScriptFrenzy.org.
• 2) You may write individually or in teams of two. Writer teams will have a 20,000 total word goal for their single co-written script.
• 3) Script writing may begin no earlier than 12:00:01 AM on June 1 and must cease no later than 11:59:59 PM on June 30, local time.
• 4) You may write either a screenplay or a stage play.
• 5) You must, at some point, have ridiculous amounts of fun!!!

So if you haven't already,... go download Celtx here, and then sign up for Script Frenzy there and start creating that inner masterpiece that's been itching to get out.

And by the by, as an interim solution to facilitate the writing process, over the next few days the Celtx devs will be adding a server-side word count feature especially for this auspicious occasion :) So stay tuned, and ....

Good Luck!

Zack Wilson - GrandPrize Winner of Ithaca College CellFlix Cell Phone Fest

ZackwilsonOn behalf of the Celtx community, the Team would like to extend a big Congrats to Celtx alumnus, Zack Wilson, for his recent win in Ithaca College's 2nd Annual CellFlix Festival. Zack impressed the judges so much with his piece "Assisted Living" (view below) that they awarded him the $5,000.00 Grand Prize! In 30-seconds, Wilson's film tenderly relays the message to "Get out and live your life". THe piece was written with Celtx and shot on a cell phone, and while that all may sound simple enough, he actually shot 6 cuts, so it took him about 90 minutes to set up and shoot, and about 10 hours to edit.

Zack's production group, negativeZERO Films just finished another short film titled "Grief Assurance" in which Celtx was used for all of the pre-production including organizing cast and crew. They are now looking to distribute on the Internet, ... so if you know anybody, point them that-a-way and leave a message.

Zack is a senior TV-Radio major at Ithaca College's Roy H. Park School of Communications and about to graduate any minute now, so I'm sure this CellFlix win is a bit of icing on that graduation cake!

Hopefully we'll be seeing much more from this talented fellow.

All the best to you, Zack Wilson!

Les Fées - Celtx Project of the Week #19

Pow_2Depiction_2

This week's POW winner is 'Les Fées', a music video screenplay (and wicked storyboard) created by Sebastien Bellaval for the French rock band, 'LIPO'.

Sebastien hails from Toulouse, France and describes himself as a storyteller, screenwriter, filmmaker, and owner of Galere Prod. He says, "I mainly deal with a "psycho-fantasy" style, exploring and exposing the most personal feelings of unlikely heroes through their dreamlike world struggling with their serious real life. Magic and Reality works together in every mind.." And you certainly see that reflected in Les Fées which tells the story of a young insomniac and his struggles with work at a daily newspaper.

An interesting approach to a music vid, and lots of great effort here, gang so go check it out!

Félicitations, Sebastien!!

Assembly 1.0 Projectbook - Now Available!

by team indyishTimcover_2

The Indyish Assembly 1.0 is a collaborative art relay that took place from Feb 10th to March 10th involving artists in music, filmmaking, and illustration. Scriptwriters wrote short scripts from a rock opera piece, filmmakers shot the scripts, and musicians made the soundtracks, each having a week to do their part. We screened the films at Friendship Cove on March 10th with bands playing their soundtracks live.

This Projectbook documents the Assembly from start to finish with a wide range of media and can be used as a tool for groups wishing to organize collaborative art projects and events.

Scripts by Jack Oatmon, Louis Pearson and Tu-Linh Doan, Sylvia Rich, David Schultz and Pat Buckley, Roseanne Harvey and Anurag Dhir, Benjamin Shingler, and Jonathan Stewart.

Colour illustrations by Beth Frey, Tyson Bodnarchuk, Pascaline Knight, Carl Ruttan, G Blott, Mirela Zdjelaric, Greg Ryan, Timothy Kasper, Donna Davis, and Jennifer Barrett.

Beautiful colour photos by Tristan Brand, Marilis Cardinal, and others, and stills from the films.

Educational tools include blog posts documenting the entire project, interview with Celtx boss, calls for participation, press release, screening invitation, emails, project rules and resources, script notes, rewrites, screening flyer and poster, Celtx feedback, and project wrapup.

Printed in full colour, 144 pages, published in May 2007 by Indyish with Creative Commons Attribution 2.5

You can purchase the Projectbook from Lulu (print-on-demand self-publishing) by going here.

You can also download this book as a pdf.

The Assembly Scriptbook, a shorter zine version of the projectbook with just the scripts and illustrations, is also available on indyish at the link below:
